A Brief History of Gem Stone Jewelry
Man is not sure when pearls were first discovered, although many believe
that it was before recorded history. Pearls have long been one of the most
sought after gems and have the tradition of being magnificent and rare. Hindu
writings tell us of Krishna bringing a gift of gem stone jewelry made of pearls
to his daughter on her wedding day. This is the first account of pearls and
weddings, possibly beginning the tradition. They believed that pearls would
bring longevity and prosperity. Greeks had the idea that pearls should be
part of the wedding as well, believing that pearls would bring love. All guests
of the wedding would be festooned in gem stone jewelry made of pearls. Pearls
were sacred wedding gems that were given for gifts as the word "pearl" became
coupled with "love".
Egyptians were among the first to use gem stones in their jewelry. Jewelry
was depicted in many drawings of ancient Egypt. They had two gem stone bracelets,
one at the wrist and one above the elbow. The jewelry was designed using amethyst,
turquoise and lapis lazuli.
During the Medieval period wearing of jewelry was highly discouraged. Can
you imagine? What were they thinking? Although jewelry was discouraged, rings
and brooches were worn. During the late Medieval and Early Renaissance period
we began to see more jewelry.
Jewelry began to appear once again during the Renaissance/Elizabethan period.
Jewelry designed with pearls were the most common at that time. Finally earrings
appear on the scene in Italy in the early 16th century, although they were
usually quite plain, made with a dainty drop pearl.
The Roaring Twenties saw new designs that were tagged "Art Deco". Most
of the jewelry was made out of abstract geometric shapes and forms. Designs
that were created by the Aztecs and Egyptians were combined with modern art
to create a stunning display of jewelry.
"Retro Modern" is a design that made it's appearance in the 1940's. Large
scale jewelry with many curves and bows were often designed using yellows,
pinks, and greens. Unusual mixtures of colored gem stones were used in this
new type of jewelry.
There was a shortage of platinum during World War II so jewelry was made
of gold and silver. In the 1990's platinum made a huge comeback along with
the designer jewelry that we are seeing today.
Today's jewelry is very diverse, created as a sculpture would be formed.
Jewelry has become an art form. Gem stone jewelry and beaded jewelry is extremely
popular, designed with silver wire and beads.
