Man is not sure
when pearls were first discovered, although many believe that it was before
recorded history. Pearls have long been one of the most sought after
gems and have the tradition of being magnificent and rare. Hindu writings
tell us of Krishna bringing a gift of pearls to his daughter on her wedding
day. This is the first account of bridal jewelry of pearls, possibly
beginning the tradition. They believed that pearls would bring longevity and
prosperity. Greeks had the idea that pearls should be part of the wedding
as well, believing that pearls would bring love. All guests of the wedding
would be festooned in pearls. Pearls were sacred wedding gems that were
given for gifts as the word "pearl" became coupled with "love".
